How to Troubleshoot Power Folding Open/Short circuits DTC in MirrorEye MKII

FA470 is detecting failure on Power Folding, how to troubleshoot the condition to locate the root cause

The MirrorEye system features a Power Folding function that retracts or extends both wings using the joystick's upper-center button.

The Extended Mode is the default configuration and is primarily used during normal operation. It should be set to this position during installation, when the ignition key is turned on and also when the vehicle is traveling at city or highway speeds.

The Retracted Mode is used for specific situations, such as parking in tight spaces where side clearance is limited.

In case of problems with Power Folding related feature, follow the steps below:

  1. Mandatory tools
    1. Multimeter: will be used to measure the electrical properties like continuity function, output voltage (V) and resistance (Ω).

  2. Related connectors
    1. Main harness "ECU" connector

Pin numbering order:

  • Identify the side with the problem
    • If you have the Power Folder problem with only 1 side of the wing (Driver or Passenger side), filter the available tests below to only the side of your interest.
    • If you have the Power Folder problem with both sides, perform all tests below.

3. Internal CAN Verification test

Step Description
a

Turn on the truck using the ignition key and wait 20 seconds until the MKII system starts properly.

Checking if the system started properly:

1- image top and bottom from driver side monitor should be split with a bar in the middle of the frames

2-distance lines must be appearing on top side image on both monitors

b

Access the Driver Menu pressing & holding the Left Manual Pan Button for 3-5 seconds

c

The menu should appear on the driver’s monitor.

Rotate the center dial and press the MirrorEye center knob click to access the "Status" menu.

d

The Internal CAN Status should be "Detected"

e

If Driver Menu is not accessible, then we should troubleshoot the MirrorEye connection to Internal CAN or the Joystick before continuing.

4. Main harness "Continuity" test for Open-Circuit issues

Warning

Before performing the steps below, ensure that the electrical circuit you are testing has no power.

If the truck is on, turn it off and turn master battery switch off, making sure there is no power coming from the battery

Step Description
a

Set the multimeter to Continuity Test mode (Ω).

b

Insert one probe into the "8-pin wing" connector and the another into the "ECU" connector, following these combinations and test one pair combination at a time:

Power Folding Harness Continuity:
  1. Main Harness: Driver Side to ECU Main Connector
    1. PF_LS_H: "8-pins wing connector" pin 3 to "ECU connector" pin 9.
    2. PF_LS_L: "8-pins wing connector" pin 4 to "ECU connector" pin 10.

  2. Main Harness: Passenger Side to ECU Main Connector
    1. IR_RS_H: "8-pins wing connector" pin 3 to "ECU connector" pin 7
    2. IR_RS_L: "8-pins wing connector" pin 4 to "ECU connector" pin 8.
  3. Driver/Passenger Wing 8-pins Connector
    1. "8-pins wing connector" pin 3 to pin 4

c If the multimeter beeps in each step above, a complete path (continuity) has been detected.

If the circuit is open, the multimeter will not beep.

If test results have no continuity on step 1 and 2 above, means an open circuit on the main harness, so it must be replaced.
If test results have no continuity on step 3 above, means an open circuit on the wing, so it must be replaced.

5. Main harness & Wing "Continuity" test for Short-Circuit issues

Step Description
a

Set the multimeter to Continuity Test mode (Ω).

b

Insert one probe into the "8-pin wing" connector and the another into the "ECU" connector, following these combinations and test one pair combination at a time:

  1. Main Harness Driver/Passenger Wing 8-Pin Connector Continuity:
    1. 8-pins MAIN HARNESS wing connector: pin 3 to pin 1
    2. 8-pins MAIN HARNESS wing connector: pin 3 to pin 2

    13. 8-pins MAIN HARNESS wing connector" pin 4 to pin 8
  1. Driver/Passenger Wing 8-Pin Connector Continuity:
    1. 8-pins WING connector" pin 3 to pin 1
    2. 8-pins WING connector" pin 3 to pin 2
    3. 8-pins WING connector" pin 3 to pin 5
    4. 8-pins WING connector" pin 3 to pin 6
    5. 8-pins WING connector" pin 3 to pin 7
    6. 8-pins WING connector" pin 3 to pin 8
    7. 8-pins WING connector" pin 4 to pin 1
    8. 8-pins WING connector" pin 4 to pin 2
    9. 8-pins WING connector" pin 4 to pin 5

    11. 8-pins WING connector" pin 4 to pin 7
    12. 8-pins WING connector" pin 4 to pin 8

6. Results and conclusion

If one of more test's above have results continuity (multimeter beeps), means that the system has a short circuit.
If the short circuit is on Main Harness Driver/Passenger Wing Connector, must replace the main harness.
If the short circuit is on Wing Side Connector, must replace the respective Wing.
