How to Troubleshoot IR Open/Short circuits DTC in MirrorEye MKII

FA470 is detecting failure on Flood or/and Focused IR, here is the way to check the components until you find the root cause

The MirrorEye uses IR lights when in night mode.

There are two types of lights:

  • Flood IR (night mode);
  • IR Focused IR (Enable on Reverse Gear - Only available on MKII).

For more information about how to use, see the article here.

In case of problems with IR related features, follow the steps below:

  1. Mandatory tools
    1. Multimeter: will be used to measure the electrical properties like continuity function, output voltage (V) and resistance (Ω).

  2. Related connectors
    1. Main harness "ECU" connector

      Related pinout table:

Pin Color Description Related Light Meaning
5 Green PF_FR_H Focused IR 12v Power Supply to Left/Right Side
6 Black PF_FR_L Focused IR  GND to Left/Right Side
15 Red IR_RS_H Driver Flood IR 12V Power Supply to Left Side
16 Black IR_RS_L Passenger Flood IR GND to Right Side
17 Red IR_LS_H Driver Flood IR 12V Power Supply to Left Side
18 Black IR_LS_L Driver Flood IR  GND to Left Side

      Pin numbering order:
      a

    2. 8-Pins Wing connector ("Driver Side Camera Wing" and "Passenger Side Camera Wing")

            Related pinout table:

Pin Color Description Related Light Meaning
1 Red

IR_LS_H

IR_RS_H

Flood IR 12V Power Supply
2 Black

IR_LS_L

IR_RS_L

Flood IR GND
7 Green  PF_FR_H Focused IR 12v Power Supply
8 Black PF_FR_L Focused IR GND

            Pin numbering order:

  • Identify the side with the problem
    • If you have the IR problem with only 1 side of the wing (Driver or Passenger side), filter the available tests below to only the side of your interest.
    • If you have the IR problem with both sides, perform all tests below.

3. Main harness "Continuity" test

Warning

Before performing the steps below, ensure that the electrical circuit you are testing has no power.

If the truck is on, turn it off and turn master battery switch off, making sure there is no power coming from the battery.

Step Description
a

Set the multimeter to Continuity Test mode (Ω).

b

Insert one probe into the "8-pin wing" connector and the another into the "ECU" connector, following these combinations and test one pair combination at a time:

  1. Flood IR Harness Continuity:
    1. Driver Side to ECU Main Connector
      1. IR_LS_H: "8-pins wing connector" pin 1 to "ECU connector" pin 17.
      2. IR_LS_L: "8-pins wing connector" pin 2 to "ECU connector" pin 18.

    2. Passenger Side to ECU Main Connector
      1. IR_RS_H: "8-pins wing connector" pin 1 to "ECU connector" pin 15.
      2. IR_RS_L: "8-pins wing connector" pin 2 to "ECU connector" pin 16.
  2. Focused IR Harness Continuity:
    1. Driver/Passenger Side to ECU Main Connector
      1. PF_FR_H: "8-pins wing connector" pin 7 to "ECU connector" pin 5
      2. PF_FR_L: "8-pins wing connector" pin 8 to "ECU connector" pin 6
c If the multimeter beeps in each step above, a complete path (continuity) has been detected.

If the circuit is open, the multimeter will not beep.

If test results have no continuity, or results in an open circuit, must replace the main harness.

4. Main harness "DC Voltage" test

This verification will require 2 people, one to safely switch gears to reverse, 2nd tech to perform the measurement with the multimeter.

Step Description
a If main battery switch was turned off in the previous test, turn back on, and turn on the truck by key cycle.
b Set the gear to reverse and hold on during all the steps below.
c

Turn on the night mode at joystick

c

Set the multimeter to "DC Voltage" mode (V)

d
  1. Driver/Passenger Flood IR Harness DC Test
Insert one probe into the "8-pin wing" connector pin 1 and the another to pin 2.
  2. Driver/Passenger Focused IR Harness DC Test
Insert one probe into the "8-pin wing" connector pin 7 and the another to pin 8.
e

The multimeter should show 12V Power Supply.

The acceptable range of this value should be around  +- 10%.

If the circuit is open, the multimeter will show 0V Power Supply.

If test results has no voltage, or results in an open circuit, must replace the main harness.

5. Results and conclusion

If all the tests performed above pass within spec ranges and the problem persists, the problem is in the wing. Therefore, it will be necessary to replace the ME wing.
